Located on the shores of Georgian Bay in Killbear Provincial Park, this lone Jack Pine is legendary in Canadian art.  It is believed to be the inspiration for a number of Group of Seven paintings, including A.Y Jackson’s “Bent Pine” and Tom Thompson’s “The West Wind”.

The Group of Seven have always been influential to me, and many of the scenes I capture have been inspired by their work in one way or another.  When I heard the tree was dying in 2019, I knew I had to make the trip and capture it before it was gone.

Captured the following summer, in the last year this iconic tree was able to stand on its own.
